This past week of subbing has been crazy!! Every time I have been teaching in the middle school I have either been in the lab or had portable lab in the classroom. I thought it would be more difficult subbing and having to use all these computers but it's so easy. There were some bumps a long the way like plugging it into the wrong internet hookup or students having trouble not being able to load the website, but those were all easy to take care of. It was a fun learning experiences.
One activity that the seventh graders did was a website online about sushi. They had to go to this website and find where all the different parts of sushi came from. The seventh graders thought that was boring but then when they were done with all of the information part they were able to make their own sushi but it had to be made with stuff from the midwest. I thought it was interesting and they had a great time with it. You should have seen the things they were creating. bacon, corn, apples, and all different things. I probably would never have eaten anything they created but it was interesting to see what they would come up with. Overall it was a great week.
It sounds like a fun activity. I can just imagine the weird (and wonderful) combinations they came up with.
ReplyDeleteI wonder why we always get nervous when we have to implement something we learned. The theory part always seems so much easier...until you actually do it and then you realize that the practical or implementation side of it, really was not as difficult as you expected it to be. I think of so many scenarios where this has been true, driving a car or bicycle, going scuba diving, baking a cake, and the list continues. Perhaps it is just human nature? I am glad you took the jump and implemented what you learned, and I'm glad that it was a good week.
Way to GO! That is exactly the kind of class use we talked about on the 6th in the ISU class. It has meaning, can be challenging, project, lots of criteria to help complete the assignment and then one step further with the completion of a receipe using items from the Midwest. I'm sure even though the students had to do a lot of work and research they still considered it one of the best projects they had been assigned. Way to think outside of the box!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a fun assignment! I can really see the students getting interested in something like that. I had a similar experience while I was subbing. The students were watching a video for this class. It went fine for about four periods and then the fifth during the middle of the video it stopped playing. I was so scared that I wouldn't be able to get the video playing because I had no idea what was wrong. It turned out that one student had bumped the plug. We plugged it back in and everything was fine. Thankfully it was nothing more! I've heard stories of subs who couldn't get the technology to work and rather than asking someone to help they just had the students read the whole class time. I don't think that makes much sense. I know that if something like that happened to me I would probably go get someone to help with the technology. Glad you are getting lots of experience in subbing!
ReplyDeleteI think that it is great - you were a sub and the plans included technology. Wow! Things maybe have changed a little! Leandi stated it well when she basically said, theory sounds good, but wait until you implement it. And that is the disconnect that we see in today's classrooms. Even in the preparation of teachers (we say... hey, learn this technology and use it!), but many still go into classrooms not thinking about TPACK and what that means as we prepare lessons and activities. You are taking positive steps in the right direction.
