So it's only Tuesday but it feels like this week has taken forever. Today I taught in a kindergarten classroom. I really tried to look at the technology we used through out the day. First off in the morning I used the Elmo to do the morning message. The students did a really good job with it. It was different then the ones I have used so the zoom was hard to figure out but I tried.
The other thing I used a lot was the cd player. The students love singing and dancing to those song. I had a few stuck in my all night. Another one I used today was the television and DVD player. The students also used the the computers during center time. Bailey's Book House was one of the games they were playing. It was just a for fun thing they did. Overall I used some technology that I didn't think of because it came natural.
So a funny side note that happened today with the tv and dvd. I was having trouble with it and couldn't get it to start because some switched the mode. Anyways the students thought because they were talking it broke the t.v. I have never had the class be so quiet. It was an interesting day.
Haha, ag cute! Poor students thinking they broke the TV by talking.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it interesting that I used similar technologies in my class yesterday as well. The first year students loved the movie clip (thank you YouTube) and a song (thank you iTunes)and we covered relatively difficult grammar rules using these media. The students were (by far) more engaged than they typically are when we primarily use the examples from the textbook. It seems that these basic technologies are truly applicable to any level of teaching and learning.
I was thinking back to a long time ago when I attended college at Northwest Missouri State University. They had a lab school on campus and I'm really old so computers were just coming out and the Apple hadn't even been released, OLD. I worked with the pre-school children and they already each had a lap top of their own in the classroom then. Over twenty-five years ago. They could keyboard better then any adult at that time. It was quite amazing to see them get the computers out everyday and work on them. Just thought since you taught kindergarten yesterday I thought I would tell my quick story.
ReplyDeleteI believe Leandi is exactly right when she talks about the students being more engaged in their own learning.
I'm sure it is interesting working in different schools and grade levels, especially when it comes to seeing the usage of technology.
Leandi makes an excellent point about how some technologies can be used across all grade levels. I know there are other programs out there which can be used for different grade levels which I think will make school officials more likely to buy those programs knowing they will get their moneys worth out of them. From what I've learned in class so far some programs can be pretty pricey, but I'm glad you mentioned these low tech and low cost items as well.
ReplyDeleteI finally got an elmo in my classroom so I'm planning on using it a lot. I also just set up my listening center & I'm sure my first graders will love that! It is interesting that sometimes we don't realize how much technology we actually use throughout the day. How did the kindergarteners do with the computer center? Were they engaged in Bailey's Bookhouse & about how long were they at that center? Just wondering...
